LabMCP

Open-source MCP servers that let AI agents operate real lab instruments, with safety limits, read-only modes, audit trails, and a simulator for every instrument.

01 · What it does

  • 32 servers (411 tools): balances, hotplate stirrers, syringe pumps, spectrometers, potentiostats, SourceMeters, bench power supplies, Rigol oscilloscopes and more
  • Practice mode on every connector (--simulate), with no instrument connected
  • Read-only mode (--read-only) and per-experiment limits such as --limit max_temperature_c=60
  • Generic SCPI, Modbus TCP/RTU, EPICS and SiLA 2 connectors for instruments without their own server
  • Command log (get_command_log) and an optional --audit-log file

02 · Install

$ claude mcp add balance -- uvx labmcp-mettler-toledo --simulate
  1. Install uv first (README has the one-line installer for Mac/Linux and Windows)
  2. Each instrument family is its own package: swap labmcp-mettler-toledo for the name in the README's Supported instruments table
  3. Real instrument: find its address with `uvx labmcp ports`, test with `uvx labmcp-mettler-toledo --address COM3 --check`, then replace "--simulate" with "--address", "COM3"
  4. Cursor uses the same mcpServers format in .cursor/mcp.json or ~/.cursor/mcp.json (docs/clients.md)
  5. The README marks most connectors "simulated": built from the manufacturer's manual, not yet confirmed on a real instrument by a user
